The wake up call
Some moves start with a dream board. Ours started in a hospital room.
Ten years of dreaming
We were burnt out. There was no doubt about it. Between my husband’s accident and me losing my job, the stress and anxiety of our lives consumed our moods until we were just dragging through every day. It wasn’t until his accident, when he was hospitalized with severe burns and we were stuck in Our Lady of Lourdes ICU in Lafayette, LA for weeks, that we were forced to face our reality. We made the decision to slow down in our lives, right then and there. We couldn’t do it any longer
The reality check
From Tik Tok to TEFL
My husband and I have been talking about moving to another country for nearly ten years. It was a dream that we had but never really thought would happen
The reality check II
The logistics are always the problem; where you move, what you have to do to make the move happen, etc.
Moving Abroad Essentials
I found my reality check on Tiktok. I stumbled across a video, as most people do, on my For You page, of a young lady who had moved abroad and was teaching English in Spain. My curiosity peaked and I thought to myself how nice it would be to have a life like that. I couldn’t wait to find out how that dream could turn into a reality. I dove back onto the internet that same day and started my research.
I signed up for a 168 hour TEFL course through TEFL Academy and began my search for a school in Costa Rica. The applications began to roll in as soon as I got my TEFL certification. It really is amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it! I actually began emailing schools that had no positions open to tell them I was available if something happened to come up. I believe it was one of those emails that got me the job offer at the cloud forest school in Monteverde. You had to have a referral to get an interview, so I emailed the school asking specifically for a referral as well. I had no idea my husband had already applied to the school and had gotten an interview! There was a second interview that same day, two hours after we had met, and when I got home that day, I had an email in my inbox confirming my job offer. I was elated! I cried tears of joy, so shocked was I to hear the news. As I do in moments of great happiness or sadness, I posted on social media.
Announcing the news is easy. Having to carry it out is not. We began to slowly empty out our house room by room. The furniture was gone first, and we began to leave the rest of our sentimental belongings in storage for a while. The rest of our belongings fit into five suitcases along with my ticket to Liberia. Believe me, there are a lot of details that go into moving overseas that few people would think about or enjoy. I got shingles while cleaning out the house, had to take a couple extra days to go to the state capital to run some errands, and more. These are all things not seen on social media. All in all, between the ICU in Lafayette and a Tik Tok video, we made it to Monteverde. This is just the beginning of many adventures our family will share, and we can’t wait to show you what life is really like in the slow lane.
